ELY, MN (Northland's NewsCenter)--For some it came a little earlier than expected, but the first snow of the season is officially here.
About three inches of snow covered some areas of Ely, Thursday
Snow patches covered the fields and roadsides of Highway 169 from Tower to Ely.
Two men from New York camping near entry point 27 in the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness say they snowfall took them by surprise when they woke up.
"We couldn't see across the lake," Patrick Richards said. "We couldn't see across the shore or anything. It was coming down like really hard, big flakes, in and out of slush and rain and snow and it was pretty intense."
"It was a great sight, very picturesque," Todd Lunderborg said. "After about a half hour, we were just really wet, it was pretty cold."
The forecast is for the Ely area to see about an inch of snow on Friday.
