Death Investigation of Deer River Woman Ruled Homicide

Deer River, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A woman found dead inside her home on Wednesday died of a homicide as a result of multiple traumatic injuries due to assault, according to the Itasca County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities have identified the victim as Sonya Ann Smith, 43, of Deer River.

Investigators from Itasca County and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension have conducted numerous interviews and collected forensic evidence from the scene which has led them to believe that this was not a random attack.

Investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to public safety.

The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the homicide with assistance from the Deer River Police Department, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Ramsey County Medical Examiner.

The incident is still under investigation.
