Name released in Minntac Plant electrical accident

Mt. Iron, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Authorities have released the name of the man who was involved in an electrical accident at the Minntac Plant in Mt. Iron this morning.

Jon Malek suffered serious injuries after he was shocked while performing work related to an electrical apparatus at the plant around eight this morning.

Minntac First Responders administered first aid to Malek before he was airlifted to Essentia St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Malek is the Vice President of the 1938 Chapter of the United Steelworkers Union.

U.S. Steel released the following statement:
"This morning at Minntac there was a serious electrical incident at a substation involving a represented employee. He has been transported to Duluth to receive medical attention. Due to privacy laws we cannot release additional information on the employee. Safety is a core value at U. S. Steel and the incident is under review in cooperation with regulatory authorities and the United Steelworkers. Operations have been suspended at this time."

Minntac is owned by U.S. Steel, and is the largest plant on the Iron Range.
