Grand Rapids, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A group in Grand Rapids gathered Monday to honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

They met at the Angel of Hope Park near the south bank of the Mississippi River.

The group said each of the 26 victims' names and then said prayers together for the families who lost loved ones.

Organizers say that they have children of their own, and while the shooting happened miles away, it feels close to home.

"Knowing what my children mean to me and the thought of losing them that way, any way, is just devastating," said organizer Paula Brotenpiskel, "I just wanted the world to know that the small town of Grand Rapids cares."

Brotenpiskel says she's never organized anything like this before, but felt compelled to do so after the Newtown shootings.
