Morse, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A husband and wife from Arizona walked away unscathed following a hard landing of a float plane Tuesday afternoon north of Ely.

The crash occurred in the Northwest corner of the lake in Olson's Bay, according to authorities.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Department says the husband, who was piloting the plane, attempted to land on Shagawa Lake.

However, authorities say after the plane hit the water, it lifted off again and then went straight down into the lake.

The County Sheriff says the two were not hurt, however the plane is considered totaled.

"It was shocking. We were obviously concerned for whoever was in it when it went down, but it was quite "creepy" to come across such a sight," said Gina Dean of Ely, MN who snapped several pictures of the plane.

Investigation of the accident is being conducted by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The St. Louis Co. Volunteer Rescue Squad is assisting with removing the plane from the lake.
