IRRRB and Minnesota DNR partnership bolsters trout fishing

Eveleth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - A change fisheries management in Kinney Pit Lake near Buhl and a partnership with the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB) are returning rainbow trout fishing to High Lake near Ely.

When the rainbow trout fishery at Kinney Pit Lake became compromised by too many yellow perch and smelt, fisheries managers chose to include the more predacious splake in the lake's management plan.

The IRRRB had been stocking the lake with rainbow trout for many years under a cooperative agreement with the DNR to improve fishing on the iron range. Those high quality fish needed a new home.

Rather than reduce their overall contribution to fish stocked on the Iron Range, the IRRRB looked to other former mine pits that might benefit from the displaced rainbow trout. Yearling rainbow trout have been the mainstay of the IRRRB stocking program since the 1980s, and anglers like them.

The DNR has also maintained a trout stocking program in the area since the 1970s. As the program faced a number of budget cuts, stocking efforts on some lakes have been scaled back or discontinued. High Lake north of Ely was one such lake where rainbow trout stocking had ceased.
