Eveleth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - An Iron Range school is teaching their students life lessons by stepping outside the classroom.

Students at East Range Academy of Technology and Science participate in a Service Learning Day every month.

They take time during the school day to volunteer at local businesses and organizations, like daycare centers and assisted living facilities.

School officials say the goal is to make student better individuals in the community by putting an emphasis on volunteer work.

"Our goal was to kind of teach the kids a little of some life skills and show them the value in volunteerism and have them go out and help the community," said Dean Shane Walters.

School officials say the service learning component allows students to relate skills like math and science to real world situations
