Ely, MN (Northlands NewsCenter)
-- Bears in the Northland are in walking hibernation right now.
That's a transition period where metabolism rates are ratcheting up for the summer.

This includes Ely's Internet Sensation Bears at Lynn Roger's Research Center.

Rogers says Jewel's cubs Herbie and Fern are beginning to walk, climb, and play as the spring processes.

Fern even took a twelve foot fall recently after scaling a red pine.
Jewel is sticking close to the den during the walking hibernation, but

Rogers says it will be any day now when the bears begin to roam.

"They are going to leave the den any time now. We see them getting stronger so we expect they are going to branch out and see what's out there to eat more"

BBC is currently filming a documentary about Dr. Rogers and his bear studies.

It will be on the air sometime in May.
