Chisholm, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) - Start–up venture Mining Resources LLC, an iron ore processing plant, shipped its first load of iron ore concentrate to Mesabi Nugget on Wednesday.

"[We're] about midway through the first full week of production," said Plant Manager Tom Lutes.

It took about nine months of construction to get Mining Resources to the point it's at now, production.

"This week has been extremely exciting for everyone, getting to the point of producing, all of our hard work paying off," said Lutes.

Work continues at the plant, they've already sent their first shipment and are ramping up to get to full production levels by the middle of next year. Once at full production levels, the company expects to produce one million tons of iron ore concentrate a year.

The company is operated by Steel Dynamics and Magnetation, using Magnetation's patented technology to produce the iron ore concentrate.

"It's our latest design of the Magnetation process," said Magnetation CEO, Larry Lehtinen.

It takes about 67 people to operate the project. Most of those positions have been filled.

"[I'm] just happy to see stuff coming off the conveyor," said Mining Resources Crew Lead, Jesse Stanton of the company's progress.

Company officials say the start has been a smooth one.

"No major mechanical issues, no major equipment problems," said Lutes, "Being a part of a start-up is really something special."

The company hopes to produce 26,000 tons of iron ore concentrate next month.
