Mountain Iron, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A fire in Mountain Iron yesterday did substantial damage to a rural northern Minnesota home.

The homeowner told authorities his power went out and when he tried to turn it back on something electrical happened igniting the blaze. The fire quickly spread to the roof and firefighters say it was unsafe for them to go inside, so they fought the flames from the outside only.

Another complication was that the house had a long driveway and was surrounded by a wooded area, making it difficult to get firefighting equipment to the scene. At one point the DNR was called in because the fire spread into the nearby woods.

It took about two and a half hours to extinguish the blaze. Buhl and Kinney Fire Departments responded.
