Mountain Iron, MN - MNDot officials announced a new route option for the relocation of Highway 53 near Eveleth.

During a public meeting Tuesday they introduced the E-1 route, which would swing east of Highway 53, cross over 135 and cross the Rouchleau Pit before rejoining 53 near 2nd Avenue in Virginia.

MNDot officials called the route "promising" because they say the minerals underneath the potential route have been essentially "mined out." They say this reduces the chance of having to move the highway again in order for Cliffs Natural Resources to mine underneath.

During the meeting, MNDot officials emphasized that while this was a potential route, there is still a lot of work to be done.

They say they plan to start drilling in the area within the next two weeks for testing.
