Embarrass, MN (NNCNOW.com) -- On a day that the governor of Minnesota declared "too cool for school" many are wondering if a cold temperature record for the state has been broken. While the record was not broken, residents of Embarrass, Minnesota, or "the cold spot" are talking about a sustained cold rather than a record.

It was February 2ND, 1996 when the state record for Minnesota was recorded. Back then it got so cold that National Weather Service Observer for Embarrass, Minnesota, Roland Fowler missed the recording because his thermometer broke. Unofficially, he recorded 64 below zero while nearby Tower took the record at 60 below.

"If you don't have it in there it's not official. You can't have something sitting out on the stump or nailed to a tree." Said National Weather Service Observer for Embarrass, Minnesota, Roland Fowler.

But after that embarrassing incident, he's got a new thermometer.

Roland says that his new thermometer does get down to 100 below, but also if it does ever get that low, he doesn't want to be around to read the temperature.

"Last time my thermometer broke and mine will go to 100 now, yeah, I'll be in the ball game." Said Fowler.

The record still hasn't been broken, but this winter is still one for the books.

"This winter was the coldest month of December I've ever recorded in 25 years" Said Fowler.

Roland has recorded 17 days below zero this winter and five days with temperatures colder than 40 below, much colder than the year the record low was recorded.

"This December here and into January has been everyday, it's just been 0 marks the highest we get." Said Embarrass Maintenance Coordinator, Alvin Hanson.

But while freezing temperatures may keep many inside, it's just another day for grizzled veterans of our Northland winters.

"It's just a natural way of life for ya, so you just live with it and you just put on another bundle of clothes and come on out." Said Hanson.

If you're wondering how cold it got in Embarrass this morning, the temperature was about 37 degrees below zero with wind chills well into the 60's below.
