Duluth, MN (Northland's NewsCenter) -- A family of nine, including eight children, were assisted by the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross following a fire that severely damaged their home.

On Sunday, a fire ravaged through the single-family home on Third Street NW in Cohasset.

The eight children ranged in ages from two months to 17 years of age.

Local Red Cross volunteer Becky Trudel of Grand Rapids is meeting with the family on Monday to asses their disaster-related needs.

Emergency housing is being provided by the family's insurer.

"Many fires can be prevented," said Red Cross Executive Director, Judy Hanne Gonzalez. "We urge people to have working fire detectors and to be careful with smoking materials, lighters, and candles.
