October 1, 2013 Updated Oct 1, 2013 at 2:31 PM CST

Washington, D.C. (NNCNOW.com) - A US lawmaker says Congress shouldn't be getting paychecks now that the government has shutdown.

Minnesota District 8 Representative Rick Nolan introduced the "No Government, No Pay Act of 2013" on Wednesday.

The legislation essentially says members of congress shouldn't get paid while parts of the government are shutdown.

Representative Nolan said today Congress needs to work around the clock without pay to resolve the budget crisis.
