Virginia, MN (NNCNow.com) - The Virginia City Council is seeking the Attorney General's opinion on how they should fill their vacant mayoral position.
The Council is waiting for a response from the Attorney General after writing a letter asking for an opinion and clarification on the laws involved in selecting a new mayor.
The council will likely either hold a special election or appoint someone to the position, which has been vacant since Steve Peterson stepped down in September.
During their meeting tonight the council discussed the position and the importance of ensuring that they're filling the position the right way.
"We do have a fiduciary responsibility to make sure we do the right thing," said Councilor Larry Cuffe Jr., "We also have to make sure we do the legal thing. We have to make sure that we do our due diligence and follow the rules."
The Council will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday November 20th to further discuss filling the position of mayor.
