Virginia, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Virginia city leaders tackled the problems of synthetic drugs head on during its regular city council meeting.

At the meeting, the council got a first look and reading of the proposed synthetic ordinances.

Taking a different approach from neighboring cities that permit the sale and use of synthetic drugs, the Virginia City Council unanimously supported an ordinance banning the sale, use and possession of synthetic drugs in Virginia.

Th council is following in the footsteps of Proctor's ordinances, banning synthetic drugs completely.

“We have an obligation as elected representatives of the city, the citizens you all elected us to do what you think is right and the right thing to do is to ban this substance,” said councilor Larry Cuffe.

The finance committee, will take a look at the penalties for selling and using synthetic drugs next week.

Meanwhile, a public forum will be held to discuss public safety and health issues related to synthetic drugs at the Iron Range Rehab Center Auditorium on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
