TWO HARBORS (Northland's NewsCenter) - It was a project years in the making. Two Harbors residents and leaders got to celebrate and dedicate the restored Yellowstone Mallet Locomotive.

Those involved in the fundraising and restoration project cut the ribbon in front of the train.

The Mallet made its last working run in the early 1960's.

The train needed to get repaired and re-painted, but asbestos and lead paint slowed the restoration process.

Leaders at the Lake County Historical Society say these trains helped grow the region and bookmark the era of steam on the Iron Range.

"We're trying to create a greater awareness of the importance of the railroad in the development of Two Harbors as a community. Some of that history is starting to be lost and we need to try and make a better, stronger, effort to share that with people," said Mel Sando, of LCHS.

Some of those who worked on this train came to see the dedication.

There is also a kiosk set-up to tell the story of the train's history.
