Itasca County, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The Minnesota DNR has confirmed that zebra mussels have been found in two different lakes in northern Itasca County.
A citizen reported that adult zebra mussels were attached to a dock removed from Sand Lake last fall . The DNR did confirm the zebra mussels and also found additional mussels in Little Sand Lake.
Sand Lake and Little Sand Lake are part of Bowstring chain of lakes that flow into the Bigfork River.
Additional searches are being conducted on all connecting bodies of water to determine how wide-spread the infestation may be.
Sand Lake and Little Sand Lake are now designated as infested waters and signs will be posted at all public access locations to alert recreational boaters.
The DNR is asking that recreationists on Bowstring Lake, Rice Lake, Portage Lake and Bird's Eye Lake to take additional precautions to prevent the spread to other lakes.
