St. Louis Park, MN (NNCNOW.com) - Two of the five young children seriously hurt after a car went to the bottom of a pond near the Twin Cities have died.
The three other children, ranging in age from one to seven years old, were in critical condition Thursday night.
The 23-year-old driver, the mother of at least three of the children, was able to escape from the car as it sank into the pond early Thursday morning.
Passersby attempted to pull the children to safety, but were unsuccessful due to the depth and coldness of the water.
By the time professionals pulled the children out they had been submerged for as long as 20 minutes.
State Patrol accident reconstructionists spent the day working the scene, attempting to determine what may have led the driver of the car to leave the ramp.
