Renegade Play Stirs Controversy

By KBJR News 1

The Renegade Comedy Theater in Duluth is known for making people laugh and for pushing the envelope with skits they perform.
And this month is no different with a pretty controversial play.

Dan Hanger reports.

The play centers around the question: What if, instead of Adam and Eve, God decided to create Adam and Steve?

The Renegade Comedy Theatre is examining that question and many other gay bible-themed scenarios in what's being described by the cast as indeed controversial, risqué, and entertaining.

It's a controversial comedy.

"My first reaction was oh, wow," said actor Ric Stevens.

And it's coming to the Renegade Comedy Theater in Duluth.

"And after I read it, I thought, wow, it is a little risqué, and I said, yes please," director Minden Anderson said.

Forget Adam and Eve... it's all about Adam and Steve in this comedy.

"The main message for this entire show is love and acceptance and searching for your place in life," Anderson said.

The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told, as its called, follows similar storylines from the bible, but with a little twist. The couple is gay and they meet a lesbian couple along the way.

"It's not just oh gay people," said actress Chani Ninneman. "The bible is bad. It's really about pro making your own decisions and finding your own journey through life."

Show Director Minden Anderson expects strong opinions about the show, but hopes people will keep an open mind.

She says theater is all about pushing the envelope, entertaining and making people think a little about themselves. And in the case of this play.

"Who am I, where did I come from? Is there a god? Does love last forever," Anderson said.

"It covers everything you go through a relationship," said actor Nathan St. Germain. "Ups and downs... and it really has a lot to do about things lasting."

A lasting message of acceptance these actors hope to portray.

"Really, I just like people to have a good time, come and laugh a little bit, enjoy the show without freaking out too much," actor Jim Paine said. "OK, maybe if they freak out a little bit that would be cool."

The play kicks off on the 18th and runs through the 27th.
