There was a strong showing at the Duluth City Council meeting tonight as the Native American community united to ask for funding for a Native American homeless and cultural center in downtown Duluth.
This proposal was turned down earlier by the council, but tonight it was back on the agenda for reconsideration.
After receiving many e-mails and letters, councilors decided to reconsider the proposal.
The council ended up voting in favor of providing the Native American Community Housing Organization with 600-thousand dollars from the city's Housing Investment Fund.
This money will be used to purchase the YWCA building and transform it into a homeless shelter and cultural center for Native Americans.
Many people that attended tonight's meeting say this shelter will benefit the community.
"Duluth still has serious housing needs particularly in the Native American community. In 2005 the city made a commitment to end homeless and we need to honor that commitment."The majority of the money used in this fund is supposed to go towards road developments and infrastructure.
This is causing some councilors to say the city needs to start focusing on core issues.
Since this proposal just passed there is no time-table as yet on when construction on the YWCA building will begin.
