An eleven hour police stand–off in the small town of Bessemer, Michigan ended this morning with the gunman killing his hostage and turning the gun on himself.

The Michigan State Police say the name of the woman found dead in the home is Amy Green who is 25–years–old.

Police say the gunman in the murder–suicide is 34–year–old Ladd Honkala.

Police are also saying Keegan Miller is the name of Green's 6 year old son who was shot by a rifle.

Police say the little boy was shot in the leg outside of his home as he was returning of school.

This afternoon St. Mary's Spokeswoman Kim Kaiser said the child is in stable condition following surgery.

Police say this little boy may not have been the gunman's target.

"The suspect fired a rifle the kid was hit accidentally. From the sounds of it he just happened to walk in the door when the gun went off," said Gogebic County UnderSheriff Bob Halverson.

The stand–off began around three yesterday afternoon.
Authorities responded to the scene after receiving a call about a domestic disturbance.

Under Sheriff Bob Halverson says he knows the shooter and was surprised by this act of violence.

"I've known him for many years and I wouldn't have expected this from him," said Halverson.

Many Bessemer residents are shocked that this happened in their neighborhood.

"It's just something that you wouldn't have expected to happen especially so close to home," said neighbor Kayla Close.

The violence made others think about their family's safety.

"It's really scary. I have kids and we just moved here a couple of years ago and I moved away from lower Michigan to get away from this crime stuff so it's really scary that it's happening right here," said neighbor Kim Lambert.

As the small town of Bessemer mourns this act of domestic violence police continue their investigation about what lead to this shooting.
