Superior Businessmen Hoping To Get Liquor License For New NightClub

By KBJR News 1

Two Superior businessmen plan to continue their fight with Superior's city council for a liquor license.

Alvin Berg and Vince Nelson are trying to open, what they call a "high class" bar in the former Louis Café building.

Last week their request for a liquor license was denied by the Superior city council.

Superior Mayor Dave Ross says this bar is a bad idea because it could add to police calls and create parking issues.

"My concern is a high-volume night club, a drinking only establishment, which I don't believe fits our purpose and intention to get high and best use out of our liquor license."

Dan Corbin, from the Douglas County Tavern League disagrees with the Mayor saying this would be an upscale bar with plenty of room for safe parking.

Corbin also points out the building has already had a liquor license so it isn't a new request to license this space.

Berg and Nelson want to buy the license from the National Bank of Commerce, which funded Louis café.

Corbin says the city council's refusal to allow the National Bank of Commerce to sell the liquor license could have an impact on the financing of other bars.

"What about the people that may be need to re-finance their business down the road and come to find out that their liquor license doesn't have a value any more and next thing you know they have to get their financing somewhere else."

The city council was supposed to vote again on this issue last night, but the meeting was cancelled because of the bad weather.
