Northland Soldier Laid to Rest

By KBJR News 1

U-S Army Sergeant First Class Mathew Pionk of Eveleth, formerly of Superior enjoyed basketball and hunting growing up.

And more importantly, those who knew him said he had a passion for the Armed Services.

"I talked to his father after he joined the service and he was willing to serve his country," said Pionk family acquaintance, Jim Saaristo. " I believe Matt served us well. I'm proud to have known him."

Those who knew Pionk remember his passion for one of his favorite hobbies... working on cars.

During High School Pionk restored a 1970 Chevrolet pickup truck.
And now, even the small details trigger memories on a grand scale.

"Every time I go in my garage, it's a body shop," said Saaristo. "And knowing I've worked on one of the cars he got...it'll always be there."

Beginning his military career in April 1998, Sgt. Pionk was awarded the bronze star among many other honors.

But, some say he'll be remembered most for his personality.

"From what I knew of him, he was very polite and courteous and willing to learn," said Saaristo.

Now, Mathew's friends and family are remembering a person who gave the ultimate sacrifice for his nation.

"I've got nephews in the service who have lost limbs and stuff during this war and to lose him completely, that's really tough," said Saaristo.

Sergeant Pionk is survived by his wife and three children.
