Review Of Superfund Sites

By KBJR News 1

Representatives of the Minnesota Pollution Control and U-S Environmental Protection agencies presented information Wednesday on the second five-year review of Duluth's superfund sites.

The presentation was given in Morgan Park.

The sites involved are the old U-S Steel plant and Interlake Duluth Tar.

Four parties are subsidizing the cleanup which is expected to cost 80 million dollars.

The issue of ground water monitoring at the Interlake site is being addressed by two methods.

"We're talking about somewhere in the neighborhood of five to 600 thousand cubic yards of contaminated sediment that are being addressed by either capping or dredging."

M-P-C-A officials say U.S. steel is currently addressing sediment issues in the St. Louis River.

The final report on the review is expected in late September.
