Funding For Duluth's Sewage Overflow Problem left out of Bonding Bill

It is unlikely that Duluth's wastewater overflow problem will get any help from the state this year.

Both the Governor and state Senate left out overflow basin funding in their recommended bonding bill.

Duluth is asking for 12-point-seven million dollars to pay for overflow tanks.

These basins would be used to prevent sewage overflows into Lake Superior by storing excess water until the system was ready to treat it.

Duluth officials say without state help citizens will have to foot the bill through tax increases or service cut-backs.

"One way or another this is back to a local funding challenge and we were looking to the state to be our salvation financially but what we've learned in the recent weeks is it will not be and there is no relief on the way. It will have to come from Duluth."

On a brighter note 40 million dollars for the DECC expansion has been included in both the Governor's and Senate's version of the bonding bill.

City administrators plan to go back to lawmakers during the next bonding year to ask for financial help with the city's sewage overflow problems.
