Turning 19 and 76 years-old at the same time.

That was the case for one Duluth woman today who only celebrates her actual birth date every four years.

As Joel Runck tells us, having a leap-year birthday has its ups and downs.

"I'm 19 and I'm really 76," said Mary Makitalo.

She's 76, but technically 19, since her real birthday only comes every four years, but her kids say she doesn't show her older years.

"We don't think she'll ever grow up, she celebrates the whole month, she starts talking about it all year and people ask her questions about it all year," said Mary's daughter, Barbara Brandt.

While the cake and candles bring everybody together on this special occasion, Mary says that during her early years, that wasn't always the case.

"When I was growing up it was hectic because my mother would have a birthday for me once every four years and we'd get a blizzard-nobody could come," said Makitalo.

Her eight children say when it comes to being mom, she hasn't lost a step.

"I tell you what, she's the best teenager I've ever met-she is-she's a sweetheart, except for her yelling and spanking and spanking me. Other than that she's a good teenager," said Mary's son Allen Makitalo.

And this teenager has quite the social life as well.

"People are always wondering what she's up to because almost every day, somebody's taking her out," said Brandt. " With eight children, somebody's always picking her up for lunch and so she's quite the galavanter."

As for Mary, she'll be celebrating through the night.

"I'm still a teenager," she said. " I'm 19 and I will be 76 at 1:00 tomorrow morning--then I'll start my regular years."

More than 40 people were on-hand this evening to celebrate Mary's Birthday at Duluth's Faith Haven Apartments.
