St. Paul, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- The total number of valid permits in Minnesota is 165,295. Today the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) released that about 60,500 permits for carrying handguns were issued last year.
All information was provided to the BCA by Minnesota Law Enforcement Agencies. Minnesota law enforcement agencies reported to the BCA that individuals with permits committed 1,023 crimes in 2013.
More than half of those crimes were DWI's or other traffic offenses. The BCA reports that last year's data on crimes committed by individuals with permits is significantly higher than it has been in past years. This could be because there were more permit holders in 2013 than there have been in previous years.
Last year about 63,000 permits were applied for but only about 60,500 were issued. Compared to 2012, the number of permits issues nearly doubled in 2013.
The top five counties in Minnesota for permits issued in 2013 are Hennepin, Anoka, Dakota, Ramsey and Washington. Hennepin with about 8,000 permits issued.
