A law in Wisconsin now requires hospitals to provide rape victims emergency contraception if they request it.

The bill, which Governor Jim Doyle signed Thursday, requires Wisconsin emergency rooms to give information about the so-called morning-after pill to rape victims and dispense the drug at their request.

Doyle says the state will be vigilant in following up with any complaints about hospitals not following the law.

This is great news. I've heard several stories lately about doctors with the support of their hospitals denying woman emergency contraception because it is counter to their ideologies. With more and more hospitals operating under religous edicts, it is nice to know that SOMEONE cares about woman's health in the face of traumas like rape.
