Hermantown's Golf Skydome To Close

By KBJR Manager

After over a decade of business, it was announced Friday that the Golf Skydome in Hermantown will close its doors.

Julie Pearce has the details on its closure and plans for the site's future.

Rising energy costs are affecting everything from the gas pump to the grocery store and now a popular recreational hotspot.

Imagine trying to heat a space that's 30-thousand square feet, has 65-foot tall ceilings, and no insulation.

The Skydome itself isn't the only thing inflated around there for owner David Kolquist.

The cost of heating is putting his business in the red.

"Trying to sell a bucket of balls and having an energy bill each month of 15- 17 thousand dollars, you can't turn enough buckets of balls to pay for just your heating costs."

Increasing business costs have driven the Skydome into the ground.

"We've made a decision after taking a look at it, that the dome is going to come down for good."

Its something that many local athletic teams and golf patrons are sad to see go.

"I can't believe it. It seems to be a nice facility for the folks of Duluth-Superior. I don't know what the folks are going to do."

"I don't know, we're going to have to find another place!"

Bill makes the drive from Rice Lake weekly to hit a bucket of balls and to keep his summer game up to par.

"I drive only an hour and a half, and at only 4 dollars and a half a gallon, that's not much is it, yes, but it's the only one we can have in the area."

"It is going to be a loss for the community I think, and certainly for the local golfers."

While some golfers may be disappointed, volleyball enthusiasts can start getting excited.

"The last couple of years have become difficult. We're excited about going another direction."

Kolquist plans to deflate the dome on April 20th.

A few weeks later and just in time for the summer, an outdoor volleyball facility with six sand courts and 2 outdoor bars will stand in its place.

It's something Kolquist expects to be a summer hotspot.
