Duluth was seeing stars today as Hollywood celebrities George Clooney and Renee Zellweger rolled into town.
We had two reporters along the red carpet...we begin with Julie Pearce who tells us more about the movie and the pop idols' reactions to the city in which it was based.
From the Hollywood back lot to the red carpet in Duluth, celebrities George Clooney and Renee Zellweger arrived in style.
With both pomp and circumstance, the Hollywood stars rolled into the Depot aboard the vintage train "Northlander" as a throwback to days of the roaring 20's in Duluth, "We've been on this train for weeks!", says Clooney.
It was a time when the Duluth Eskimos reigned the turf and the game of football had no rules... they were rough, they were ready... they were "leatherheads".
Their Duluth visit was marked by media outlets from around the region and an official proclamation was made by the mayor of Duluth, "Do officially proclaim today as Leatherhead Day in the city of Duluth."
Clooney says they actually came to Duluth earlier in the year, "and we thought about shooting here, but it was in February... and apparently it's cold in February."
"Such a rich history here, it was kind of interesting to learn about it," said Zellweger.
The football team in the movie is referred to as the bulldogs, ironically sharing the name of the University of Minnesota- Duluth's mascot. And, even Hollywood stars know about the school's most recent victory, "By the way, congratulations to the lady bulldogs, how bout that?! That's unbelievable!"
Clooney, both the director and star of Leatherheads, says filming was full of challenges, "Well, I wanted to play Renne's part as well, but..." Zellweger responded saying he looked much better in the dresses, or at least the lipstick he appears wearing in a scene from the movie, "the bright red that he wears on weekends is much better."
Laughing, and playfully poking fun at one another, the stars said they were enjoying their visit and were looking forward to meeting the fans waiting outside.
"I plan to take a little walk before we get on the plane out of here and get a little look cause the harbor is kinda pretty and cold," said Zellweger.
