"Older Than America" Is Hitting The Big Screen

By KBJR News 1

The plotline of the movie involves the impact of the early 20th century American Indian Boarding School Experience on later generations.
Director, Georgina Lightning's father attended a boarding school.

"Over 50 percent of the kids who attended boarding school...died at boarding school. So it affects every Native American on this continent,"
says Lightning.

This Native American thriller is set in a town once home to an Indian boarding school.

Lightning, along with Hollywood actors; including Adam Beach, Tantoo Cardinal, and Wes Studi bring the story to the big screen...in haunting a fashion.

Deep secrets about the school and its past come to light in this drama...filled with suspense.

"I started out as an actor, in 1990, studying and getting into acting. And then coaching actors...and this is my debut, and I can tell you...this is the most, rewarding satisfying experience I have ever hand working on this film," said Lightning.

As it was with Lightning's family...Rain, the main character in the film is a Native American girl who wasn't aware of any of her Indian heritage.
But by movie's end her experiences allow her to get in touch with a culture "Older than America."

"We lost our language because of these schools. A lot of our people don't speak the language anymore... so this story has got to be told," said Tribal Council Member Eugene Reynolds.

The movie is now being shopped around for worldwide distribution.

"Older than America" will be shown Thursday at Premiere Theater in Cloquet...as a fundraiser for the Cloquet Education Youth Foundation.

Tickets are still available for a special cast and crew screening it will be held at 7 p.m.

The early and late shows are sold out.

This is a film that should hit the big screen everywhere. It is a story that needs to be told to every one in America. This is only SOME of the true history of what has been done to the Indigenous (Native American) People by the government.
