Unattended Candle Cause of Fire Along The Gunflint Trail

By KBJR News 1

An unattended candle likely caused the fire that destroyed the main building of the Hungry Jack Lodge.

The Cook County sheriff's office says the candle was left
burning in a bathroom on the lodge's lower level.

The candle was on a shelf atop a bar of soap and had no protective cover around the flame.

The lodge on the Gunflint Trail northwest of Grand Marais was
destroyed by fire March 26th.

No one was killed or seriously hurt.

Owner Forrest Parson has said he hopes to rebuild.

The fire spared the resort's 14 cabins, and he has said he plans to keep the resort open.

The lodge was also destroyed by fires in 1931 and 1972.
