Mesothelioma Study Recieves Financial Boost

By KBJR Manager

The Minnesota senate has given preliminary approval for the funding of a study of a rare cancer among Iron Range miners.

The five- million dollar research is expected to get a final vote as early as Monday.

Governor Tim Pawlenty had objected to the House plan to withdraw the money from a special workers compensation fund.

He said it could have resulted in premium increases for all businesses that feed into the fund.

Senator David Tomassoni of Chisholm says he worked with the administration and that the money would be withdrawn from an assigned risk fund, which has a surplus.

House majority leader Tony Sertich of Chisholm says area lawmakers are eager to get the study underway.

It's being spearheaded by the University of Minnesota.
