The Duluth Heritage Sports Center has been up and running for a week, but the center's display committee is still looking to add some final touches. LeAnn Wallace has the story.
"This is what you used to do, you used to spend your days at the rink whether it was playing hockey or skating."
To celebrate that particularly Northland history the Heritage Sports Center Committee is looking for your memorabilia.
Items of Duluth past will be displayed throughout the center.
"Old equipment made out of felt, some bamboo that was in the hockey breezers, a lot of photo's because actually in the arena there are a lot more rooms of photos, teams that won any state tournament, whether it's a peewee team or adult league."
The heritage committee has been planning, and collecting, historic displays for three years, and is now looking for specific items to complete their collection.
Hundreds of items have already been donated, that showcase just how deep Duluth's passion and history is for skating.
"It's a September 1949 issue of National Geographic, big article on Minnesota and a couple pictures of Duluth, obviously National Geographic thought playing shinny hockey was a good representation of the city of Duluth."
"Mr. Bobwatt came to us, and he was a very instrumental person out in the Morgan Park, Garry New Duluth area in getting hockey together, and he gave us this goalie stick that he used back in mid 1920's."
The committee hopes the displays will bring back old memories, and inspire new ones.
"We can preserve this heritage so the public can see what has happened in the past and what can still happen today."
The committee hopes the displays will be complete and on display at Duluth's Heritage Sports Center by September.
