Minnesota A Leading State In Alcohol Abuse

By KBJR News 1

When it comes to alcohol abuse, Minnesota is one of the leading states.
The state also ranks slightly higher than the national average in marijuana abuse.

To combat these trends The Minnesota Department of Human Services has begun a series of community forums to educate parents and educators.

Carol Falkowski says it's important for parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

"Parents need to plug in. Talk early, talk often. Drug abuse isn't just the talk that happens. Have continuing conversations set consequences in advance, set expectations and enforce those consequences when the behavior does happen"

Falkowski also says parents should realize the world is a different place from when they were growing up and plan their talks with their children accordingly.

Central High School played host to the community forum Tuesday night.
