Northland Credit Unions Lend Helping Hand

By KBJR News 1

Credit unions throughout the state are supporting a non-profit agency...that provides "specially adapted" homes for wounded service members.

This week, the Embarrass-Vermilion Federal Credit Union raised more than two thousand dollars for a soldier in need of a new home.
Chris Buckley has that story.

This week, residents from across the Iron Range showed their support for Army National Guard Sergeant Marcus Kuboy...

Kuboy was injured in an explosion last year while serving in Iraq

"He was in a humvee and thrown from the vehicle. He spent time at Walter Reed and now at a VA hospital in Minneapolis. They're not sure if they can save his other leg. He had back, neck and brain injuries."

The money raised from this dinner is going to support the nonprofit group, "Homes for our troops," to help build the wounded soldier a new home in Woodbury.

"so this house will be specifically designed for his needs."

Credit union employees joined soldiers from the National Guard's 114th Transportation company out of Chisholm to serve more than 200 people at the American Legion in Aurora Monday night.

"He's one of our own, we've got to take care of our own. I know the public is very supportive, they're going to assist in any way they can, but he's one of us and we're going to do anything we can to help."

"My son was in Iraq along with many of his friends, and they all came back safe and sound, so we're thrilled we don't have to build a house like that here, and this is to say we appreciate what our troops do."

The 114th is a new unit and most members have been deployed with other units in the past.

"The support from the community with the new unit in Chisholm has been outstanding, the city of Chisholm has been fantastic, we're growing bigger and better every day and hoping to help out in our community, give back to our community."

Community donations helped make this event a success.

Crews broke ground on Sergeant Kuboy's home last month.
Donations are still being accepted at the Embarrass - Vermilion Federal Credit Union.
