The Duluth–Superior port has brought success to numerous businesses across the Northland and helped support thousands of jobs.

In 2012 Minnesota exports totaled 20.6 billion dollars. That's a 246 million dollar increase over the year before.

"Last month we moved over a quarter of a million tons of iron ore overseas," says Adolph Ojard, Executive Director of the Duluth Seaport Authority.

At an estimated 100 dollars a ton, that's a significant amount of money that's helping to create jobs here.

"So I would challenge the commissioner to start looking at this region as a hub for the 4 state region," adds Ojard.

Sieben was in Duluth to discuss a 1.5 – million dollar global competitiveness initiative that she says will increase exports by providing money to businesses that become more export friendly. She says offices will be created to help support that expansion.

"In addition that 1.5 million will cover three new offices for the state of Minnesota in key foreign markets," says Sieben.

Cirrus Aircraft has seen so much success in Duluth they are hiring more staff to help streamline the workflow. The company knows the benefits of the port, first hand.

"Over our history we have exported about 25 – percent of all of our products. Over the last couple of year that has grown to over 40 – percent. Last year it was over 44 – percent of everything we built went overseas," says Dale Klapmeir, CEO of Cirrus Aircraft in Duluth.

Minnesota's three new office locations have not been identified as of yet, but will be based on strategic analyzes of top emerging markets.

The state of Minnesota currently has one foreign office located in China, which recent reports have shown has increased in exports by up to 20 – percent.
