Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - The St. Louis County Board rejected the adoption of a wheelage tax for the County Tuesday morning.

The board voted 6-0.

The tax would charge up to $10 per car or truck, paid at the time of a vehicles registration, which would go towards road repairs.

The measure would have raised an estimated $1.5 million annually for road and bridge projects in the county through a surcharge added to license plate and tab renewals.

Commissioner Steve Raukar initially offered to withdraw the resolution, stating it had become apparent the measure was going to fail.

The board said they will reconsider the wheelage tax again next year.
