A Look at How Unemployment Rates Are Affecting Seasonal Student Work

By KBJR News 1

Seasonal work for students returning home for the summer used to be a given.

That's no longer the case.

Students are coming home to an area where jobs are becoming increasingly difficult to come by, but for a couple of lucky college students... they found just the job they were looking for.

"I get paid pretty well here; I don't want to leave because most pay in Duluth is pretty poor"

Amity Creek Landscaping owner Doug Blackmore says he was flooded with calls from students looking for summer work, "It seems that there are more qualified motivated kids out there that want to do seasonal work than there have been in the past few years, it's easier to hire people."

Benjamin says she does think more kids are looking for employment this year, but that also in previous years kids may have thought landscaping was beneath them, "I don't know if it's work ethic is changing people don't realize they need to work for their money like we work 50-60 hours a week and that's how I make bills, a lot of parents pay for kids now a days so they don't have to work, I think that's where it's stemming from for the most part."

Derrick Schnibel, is a recent college graduate from UMD and he says he wanted one more summer in Duluth and landscaping was just what he needed.

"If I had to be stuck inside all summer I probably wouldn't be as happy as I am now.'

Some of Benjamin's friends are not as lucky.

"I have several friends that have worked a different job like every couple of months just cause either it's not that great of a job or it's horrible pay or they get fired.

So despite the staggering unemployment numbers across the country Duluth Minnesota may be just the place for college students looking for summer work.

Officials say the big jump in unemployment rates is largely due to more than 12- thousand jobs being cut in the month of May.

Currently Minnesota's unemployment rate is 5.4 percent.
