Trips On A Tankful

By KBJR News 1

Looking for a day trip this vacation season that won't drain the gas tank?

How about one that combines the thrill of a bargain hunt?

Dave Anderson has tonight's "trip on a tank full or less."

There's a tin shed on the side of old Highway 77 near Lake Vermilion filled with treasure.

It even has what looks like a treasure chest.

The place is simply called the Flea Market and its run by Sharon Smith.

"I saw a need and a little more revenue and to give everyone a chance to recycle."

The Flea Market recycles everything from an eight track of C.W. McCall's "Convoy" to a ship's cargo net for those D-Day re-enactors out there.

Sharon says you can make a living selling things like that.

"You can if you don't have real high expectations and demands but it'll keep you busy and out of trouble!"

The Flea Market's been around for six years and Sharon did have trouble early on.

"The first year I was open I was pleading for people to bring items in and it has really caught on. Now I go where am I going to put it all?"

The items are sold on consignment and come from all around the Northland.

"People from around the lake, Tower, Duluth, Virginia; all points around the Iron Range bring their items they want to sell."

Four bucks will get someone this mechanical Christmas song singing Chihuahua.

Sharon has seen stranger things come and go at the Flea Market.

"I've seen a lot of items that I said will never sell and then in a week they're gone so if you find something in here you like you need to pick it up right away because it won't last long."

A round trip to the Flea Market from Duluth will cost about 28 dollars in gas.

A vintage vege-matic, a small bag of stuffed animals, a wire plant hanger and eight old Gluek beer coasters will run about ten bucks.

The Flea Market is located on the Tower-Soudan end of Lake Vermilion on old Highway 77.

That's just a few miles down the road from Fortune Bay Casino.
