High Fourth Of July Prices

By KBJR News 1

Rising fuel and food prices have made celebrating this holiday weekend more expensive than previous years.

Tiffany Tarrolly did some comparison shopping.

High gas prices have encouraged many Northlanders to stay closer to home this Fourth of July.

AAA says the average regular gas price is a dollar higher than it was at this time last year.

Steve Shadowald says in addition to staying closer to home, you also might not be able to expect the traditional Fourth of July foods on the grill.

"Right now significantly we can see that people are not purchasing the red meat that they usually do like for the fourth of July–the steaks those kinds of items now are being replaced by the hotdog the hamburger and the bratwurst."

The U.S. Department of Labor says cheese and bread prices are up about 15%, and foods like chips and ice cream are up about 6.5% percent.

Shadowald attributes these food increases to three main drivers: inflation, the price of oil, and corn.

"So that is put on to the price of food as an additional cost as it comes into the grocery store, so that, of course, is passed on to the customer."

The price of ground beef, hot dogs and pork chops remain about the same as last year.

"But it's going to cost more to grill whatever meat you buy.

The price of propane has gone up 39%."

"Last year at this time, the average was about $1.85 a gallon and now it's up to about $2.57."

But if you stick to charcoal, hot dogs and hamburgers, you should be able to get by spending about the same as last fourth of july.

And we know many people like to have a few alcoholic beverages for the holiday – those prices have jumped about 3%
