Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com)--- Duluth Police shut down an entire block near Essentia Health St Mary's Hospital this afternoon searching for an inmate that fled after allegedly assaulting an officer in a parking ramp

Officers were called to the Essentia parking ramp on East 4th street on reports of an inmate from Douglas County allegedly assaulting an officer around 10:30 Thursday morning.

The inmate then fled on foot.

The Duluth Police Department arrived in the area and set up a perimeter, closing off one block of North Third Avenue East for nearly an hour in front of the St Mary's Apartment building to search for the suspect.

An officer noticed a broken window at the rear of the apartment building

A K-9 Unit was brought in and officers began a search inside the building.

The inmate, identified as 48-year-old Jeffrey Scott Montana, was found hiding in a utility room in the basement and was apprehended.

He was transported to the St Louis county jail and is being held on charges of escaping from custody, felony 4th degree assault of an officer and criminal damage to property

You might remember Montana from a case in August where he allegedly punched an 84-year-old woman in the face in Superior before robbing her.

Montana was still in custody in Douglas County on those charges and is headed to trial in February.
