DULUTH, MINN. (Northland's Newscenter)---The maritime visitor's center, next to the aerial lift bridge in Duluth's Canal Park, may be home to some new exhibits thanks to funds raised during the 23rd annual Gales of November event.
Maritime and lighthouse enthusiasts, divers, and ship captains from across Midwest attended the event today at Grandma's Sports Garden.
Gales of November is a two day educational networking fundraiser.
All proceeds will be used to help maintain and acquire new exhibits for the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor's Center.
In 1973, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers opened the Center to help educate the public about the Duluth–Superior Harbor, Lake Superior History and the water–linked commerce.
As part of the fundraiser, Gales of November is holding a "Cruise of a Lifetime" raffle.
Winners of the raffle will set sail on a 5 day– trip for two on a 1–thousand foot ore boat.
"After 9/11 due to security and tightened regulations, the public can't just hop on an ore boat," Ellen Kramer, the executive director of LSMMA said.
"You have to have special permission from the fleet companies to get onto a vessel."
Winners of the trip will be chosen on Saturday at 5:30 P.M. in the Exhibitor Hall at the DECC.
