Top Ways To Beat The Summer Heat

By KBJR News 1

Staying cool without an air conditioner during the summer isn't as tricky as it sounds.

There are many tips you can keep in mind in order to beat the heat.

One simple task includes closing curtains on hot summer days and be cautious as to when you have your windows open.

"A key is to open your windows at night and capture that cool air. It's not unusual to start out in the mid 60s in the morning but then closing the windows is something a lot of people forget to do," says Leo Wilenius with Lake Country Power.

Fans can also be an essential tool in keeping cool.

It is important to strategically place fans in the home to create a nice even circulation.

"Placing for example a tower fan in front of a window at one end of the home that can gently pull air out, while another box fan perhaps on the other end of the home can pull air in," says Wilenius.

Sun exposed walls are another source of heat.

The shade created from planting trees around your house can help keep things a little cooler.

Experts also recommend avoiding the use of common home appliances such as an oven or stove.

"If you wake up in the morning and cook bacon and eggs for breakfast and take a long hot shower and cook some coffee it's really the equivalent of turning your furnace on," says Wilenius.

Compact florescent light bulbs radiate less heat in a home.

You can save at least 60–dollars per year by changing your incandescent light bulbs to CFLs.

But of course natural light is always the most efficient lighting source during the daytime.

For those of you that plan on using an air conditioner this summer, Lake Country Power offers a cycling air conditioning program.

This program automatically turns on and off the air in 15 minutes intervals during periods of high electric demand, which saves both the user and the provider money.
