Strawberry Pickin' Weekend

By KBJR News 1

Now that summer’s in full swing, strawberry farms in Minnesota are open for customers.

Minnesota’s cool spring caused many berry farms to open a week or two later than usual but growers say the 2008 strawberry crop is very good.

Thaddeus McCamant, a specialty crop instructor with Northland Community and Technical College, said strawberries can do well in cool weather.

“The cooler spring may have delayed the bloom, but this is still one
of the best crops I’ve seen in a long time,” McCamant said.

Finding and contacting a local berry farm is easy thanks to the
Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s popular Minnesota Grown
Directory.

The 2008 Directory includes 88 strawberry growers statewide
along with nearly 700 orchards, farmers’ markets, garden centers and
other locations to buy products directly from farmers.
