Getting Fuel For Free

By KBJR News 1

With the average price of gasoline still hovering around four bucks a gallon, watching your gas gauge fall into the orange can make you cringe.

These high prices may be contributing to a rash of fueling and fleeing.

But there is a world where you can "fuel for free".

Meteorologist Shannon Murphy takes us there in, "Your Green Life."

One hundred thousand... two hundred thousand... now over three hundred thousand. That's how many miles Arne Vainio's car has traveled.

But, there is something more special than that... it's a Veg Car... it runs entirely on Waste Vegetable Oil.

Although Arne has converted two of his vehicles into eco-friendly cruisers, this wasn't always the case.

"I have had all these gas powered fast cars. And I spent the first half of my life trying to make cars use more fuel. And I think I just need to make up for that. So I am getting rid of all mine."

The process of preparing fuel for the Veg Car can be a messy one.

There are generally quite a few slips and spills as the oil is filtered.

Here's how the system works...the grease first goes through a filtering system, french-fry bits and all. After going through a series of filters... some of which Arne makes of recycled blue jeans, the oil is finally vehicle-ready.

"My wife was the first one to flip the switch on the car once I finally got it all set up, and the beautiest thing about that whole thing, was that she flipped the switch and the light turned red on the dash, and that was it. We were just driving. It didn't slow down; it didn't make any weird noises."

The resultant veggie fuel is good for the environment.

While burning vegetable oil still puts Carbon Dioxide back into the air, its carbon that was already in our atmosphere before.

When you burn fossil fuels, it releases carbon that has been safely stored underground, and that increases greenhouse gases effecting global temperature.

Although the transition from gas guzzlers to grease gobblers might sound like a pretty good idea, it may not be for all vehicles.

"There are some cars that don't lend themselves well to it. Newer cars are trickier just because you have a lot of computer controlled stuff."

And a veggie-car must already have a diesel engine.

Arne has big plans for his veg-mobile...He hopes to drive his family to the Chief Crazy Horse Monument and back without stopping for fuel.

"It's about 750 miles one way. My range with that truck is about 18 hundred miles."

Although you may have to spend a few hours of getting messy, you get free fuel in return, helping out the environment, and prolonging the life of your engine.

The cost of the waste vegetable oil filtering set-up is estimated to be about three-hundred dollars.
