The president of Finland is visiting the Northland.

Tarja Halonen stopped in Duluth not only to enjoy Finn Fest...but to also receive an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, from UMD.

The degree was awarded to President Halonen on behalf of her leadership for the rights of women, workers, and the poor.

With Minnesota having the largest percentage of Finnish heritage within the United States, President Halonen says she is more than delighted to participate in Finn Fest.

"It has been a wonderful experience to be both here and at the University, but also to be with American-Finns, at Finn Fest, which I think is excellent evidence that people have cultural ties."
