Deputy Fire Chief Defends Fundraiser

During the last meeting of Duluth City Councilors Todd Fedora took issue with the "Fill the Boot" Fundraiser in which the Duluth Fire Department participated.

The event raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

In mid August some on-duty firefighters spent part of their shift on street corners asking people for donations.

Fedora questioned whether this was legal and the best use of paid firefighters.

Monday Duluth Deputy Fire Chief Bryan Bushey sent a letter to the council explaining the decision to participate in the fundraiser.

He said the President of the Minnesota Professional Firefighters Association met with representatives of both the League of Minnesota Cities and the State Attorney General's office and were told it was a local decision.

Bushey pointed out that many other communities, including Superior have used on-duty firefighters in "Fill the Boot" fund-raisers.

In his memo Bushey told councilors that firefighters involved in the fundraising were immediately available to respond to emergencies.

$33,000 was raised for the Muscular Dystrophy Association to be used for assistance in the Northland.

Good for the Duluth Fire Department. Helping MDA is a very worthy cause. I question whether taking issue with this by Mr. Fedora is the best use of the city council's time.
