Cirrus Design Cuts 100+ Jobs

In a surprising development Cirrus Design of Duluth said Thursday that they're cutting more than 100 jobs.

Barbara Reyelts joins us from the newsroom with details of the cutbacks.

Michelle, Cirrus Design Chief Operating Officer and President told us times are getting tough for the airplane manufacturing industry.

While sales are up internationally the American economy has damaged sales in the domestic market.

As of today 102 jobs have been cut company wide.

71 of those people worked at the Duluth plant. Another 29 people worked at the North Dakota plant.

Brent Wouters the company's president and CEO said 25 of the 71 Duluth employees elected to resign.

Those positions will not be re-filled.

Barbara, did the CEO say this is the end of the cut-back and layoffs for Cirrus?

Michelle, said as far as he can see this is as bad as it will get.

Wouters told nervous employees that Cirrus is done making cuts and the company is hoping for a pick up in the national economy.

Thanks Barbara.

He cites a weak economy as one of the reasons for the decision to cut the jobs.

This year they are down eight percent on orders domestically.

He also says that before he took over they were complacent in their efficiency and has found ways to be more cost effective in how they build airplanes.
